Coping with Grief and Loss During the Holidays

Since love does not end with death, the holidays may result in a renewed sense of personal grief.  You may have feelings of loss unlike that experienced in the routine of daily living.  Society, family, and friends may encourage you to participate in the holiday spirit, but all around you the sounds, sights, and smells of the holidays may trigger memories of the one you loved.  It becomes imperative not only to take care of ourselves emotionally, but also physically.  The following are some ways to care for ourselves during the holidays:

  • Try to avoid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
  • Avoid using alcohol to self-medicate your mood.
  • Avoid eating a lot of food high in sugar or fat.
  • Physical exercise is often an anecdote for depression.  Try to be physically active 15-30 minutes every day.
  • Writing in a journal can be a good outlet for your grief expression.

If you would like more information on grieving please go to www.griefnet.org or  http://journeyofhearts.org or consider joining our Grief Support Group which will start again in the spring.
